Sana’a, Yemen – On March 10, 2016, the Women’s Partners for Peace (WPP), a Yemen-based women’s initiative, and Youth Leadership Development Foundation (YLDF), a Yemen-based civil society organization, with support from AWLI advisory council member Dr. Nafisa Hamoud Al-Jaifi, held a peace workshop entitled “Sustainable Peace Inside and Out” for 15 young women in Sana’a. WPP aims to elevate the voices of women from all political, socio-economic and religious backgrounds in Yemen to re-establish trust and resilience to promote peace in communities across the country.
As part of WPP’s mission, the organization identified youth as the key to promoting a peaceful future for Yemen. The peace workshop held on March 10 was the first of its kind for WPP. From this, WPP created a youth women’s movement called “Bilquius’ Granddaughters.” The WPP plans to continue to expand and train its network of women to promote and enhance the role of women as effective voices in the peace building process. AWLI continues to work with Dr. Al-Jaifi to identify resources for WPP and amplify the group’s work.
Dr. Nafisa Hamoud Al-Jaifi joined the advisory council of AWLI in 2013. She is a practicing pediatrician and professor of pediatric medicine at Sana’a University and is an advocate for women and children’s health, leading efforts to develop new laws and regulations to protect their rights and improve their health. Jaifi is currently a manager for the Maternal and Newborn Voucher program. Jaifi has also previously served as the Secretary-General for Yemen’s Higher Council for Motherhood and Childhood, was a board member of the National Safe Motherhood Alliance and the international White Ribbon Alliance for safe motherhood, as well as a vice chairperson of the Yemeni Pediatric Society.
